A Foundling was a term used to describe a type of Mandalorian who was not born Mandalorian, but adopted into their culture.[3] The bounty hunter known as "the Mandalorian" was once a foundling after an attack by the Confederacy of Independent Systems[2] when he was a young boy left him orphaned.[3] During the New Republic Era, "the Mandalorian" obtained beskar as a down payment from an Imperial remnant. He gave the beskar piece to an armorer who forged it into a pauldron, with the excess meaning to sponsor foundlings.[2]

After delivering the "the Child" to "the Client", he had the armorer forge some of the beskar obtained from the bounty into new armor and whistling birds, while requesting some be reserved for the foundlings, to her agreement.[4]
